Paleontological & Archaeological Sites:

For history lovers, Villa de Leyva boasts archaeological and paleontological wonders such as El Infiernito, the Paleontological Museum, and the El Fósil Paleontological and Archaeological Sites.

El Infiernito, an Indigenous Muisca site, features pre-Colombian stone structures believed to have served as an ancient astronomical observatory connected to the Muisca people's astronomical and religious practices, particularly their reverence for the sun. The stone pillars at the site are believed to have been used as an ancient astronomical observatory to track the movements of the sun and other celestial bodies, helping the Muisca to determine important agricultural cycles, such as the solstices and equinoxes. The Muisca worshipped the sun as a major deity, seeing it as a life-giving force. The phallic-shaped statues, believed to represent fertility, were likely part of ceremonies honouring fertility, life, and agricultural abundance. The combination of astronomical observation and fertility rituals underscores the Muisca’s belief in the close connection between the cosmos and the cycle of life on Earth. The name "El Infiernito" (meaning "Little Hell") was given by Spanish colonists, who viewed the site’s phallic stone statues and ceremonial layout as pagan and associated them with infernal practices.

The El Fósil Paloeonthological Sites are famous for housing one of the largest and most well-preserved fossils of a Kronosaurus, also known as Kronosaurus boyacensis. This massive marine reptile, measuring around 7 to 10 metres in length, ruled the oceans during the Early Cretaceous period and had powerful jaws lined with sharp teeth, making it one of the top predators of its time.
